About
Zigor Iturrieta Ruiz is a Basque trail and ultrarunner born 14 September 1974 in Euba, Amorebieta-Etxano, in the Basque Country of Spain. Before becoming a runner he trained as a chef, working in some of the world's finest restaurants including Martín Berasategui and Etxebarri, and ran a cooking school. He came to trail running in 2008 and progressed rapidly: in 2010, only his second year of serious competition, he placed 3rd at UTMB. He went on to win Transgrancanaria, Trail du Sancy, the Gran Trail Hautes Pyrénées (G2H), and Trail Menorca, and placed 4th at Lavaredo Ultra Trail (2012) and 2nd at Geres Trail (2014). Beyond racing he completed an unsupported traverse of the full Pyrenees via the GR11 in 10 days, from Cap de Creus on the Mediterranean to Cape Higuer on the Cantabrian Sea. He later became a television presenter and daily cooking show host in the Basque Country.
