Seth Swanson is an American ultrarunner based in Missoula, Montana, where he works as a horticulture extension agent at Montana State University. A self-taught runner who first entered a duathlon in 2008, he climbed quickly through the ranks to become one of the most formidable American 100-mile specialists of the mid-2010s. His consecutive second-place finishes at the Western States 100 in 2014 and 2015 established him as a perennial podium contender at the sport's most prestigious race. In 2014 he also set the course record at Washington's Cascade Crest 100, and placed fourth at UTMB Mont-Blanc in 2015, demonstrating versatility across both American and European mountain ultras. Known for a relaxed approach to training that eschews heart rate monitors and rigid plans, Swanson is a father of two who balances elite competition with a full professional career. An Altra-sponsored athlete, he returned to winning form at the Bighorn 100 in 2019.
