Samir Tamang is a Nepali trail and mountain runner from the Tamang community — one of Nepal's traditional highland peoples whose villages have historically occupied high-altitude terrain in the hills surrounding Kathmandu and across the mid-hills of Nepal. This heritage at altitude, combined with Nepal's growing and increasingly competitive trail running scene, forms the foundation for a generation of Nepali runners who compete in high-altitude mountain events with a physiological advantage developed through generations of life above 2,000m. Tamang has competed in Himalayan mountain race events including high-altitude trail ultra formats on Nepal's iconic mountain terrain — among the most dramatic and demanding courses anywhere in the world, traversing ridgelines below the highest peaks on earth through terrain that is both breathtakingly beautiful and uncompromisingly challenging. Nepal's domestic race scene now includes internationally recognised events on the UTMB World Series calendar and a growing roster of Himalayan ultra events, and athletes like Tamang represent the expanding competitive depth of Nepali trail running beyond the globally celebrated Sherpa and Gurung traditions.
