About

Prodigal Khumalo is a Zimbabwean-born ultrarunner who has made his home in Durban, South Africa, and across a more than twenty-year competitive career established himself as one of the most versatile long-distance athletes on the African continent. He started running at eighteen after a soccer background, driven purely by passion for the sport, and has since competed at a high level across track, road, and mountain trail disciplines. On the roads he is a two-time Comrades Marathon gold medallist — the most prestigious ultra road race in Africa. On the trails, he won the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 100km (UTCT) in 2016 on debut at the distance, and returned in 2017 to shatter the course record by nearly an hour, finishing in 9:51:00. He is known among peers simply as PK, and the warmth of his character is as evident as his competitive instinct: in 2018 he founded the Orcas Running Academy, a development running club in KwaZulu-Natal dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth runners — a programme he continues to grow while maintaining a full-time job alongside his own competitive training.
