About

Patrick Kipngeno is a Kenyan mountain and sky runner born on June 18, 1993, in Bomet County, Kenya, who holds the #1 spot on the UTMB Index — the global benchmark ranking for elite mountain and trail athletes — with a score of 971. Growing up among four brothers and three sisters, he began running in 2007 during secondary school and competed initially in road and cross-country events, setting personal bests of 29:22 for 10km and 1:02:42 for the half marathon. The Covid-19 pandemic reshaped his trajectory: with road competitions suspended, Kipngeno pivoted to mountain running and discovered an extraordinary gift for steep, technical ascents. He won his debut mountain race in 2020 at the inaugural Kenyan Mountain Running Championships at Mount Longonot, then followed with another title at the Mount Kenya Mountain Running Championships in 2022. That same year he dominated the WMRA World Cup, winning six of seven events and claiming the 2022 WMRA World Cup overall title. At the 2021 and 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships he won the uphill discipline on both occasions, defending his title on steep Alpine terrain in Innsbruck-Stubai, Austria. In 2025 he finished second at Sierre-Zinal. Based in Austria and competing for the Run2Gether team under the On brand, Kipngeno has become one of the leading mountain runners in the world.
