About

Mercedes Arcos Zafra is a Spanish trail runner best known for winning the OCC at the 2016 UTMB World Series — the Orsières-Champex-Chamonix, a 55-kilometre race through the Italian, Swiss, and French Alpine terrain at the foot of Mont Blanc with 3,500 metres of elevation gain — in a time of 6:54:13. The OCC, run annually as part of the flagship UTMB Mont-Blanc week in Chamonix each August, attracts elite women's fields from across the world and winning it is considered one of the benchmark achievements in European mountain ultra racing. For a Spanish woman to claim outright victory placed Arcos Zafra among a very small group of her countrywomen to win a UTMB family race, and secured her place in the record of the sport's most celebrated annual week of racing. Active across the Spanish and European trail circuit since that breakthrough, she has maintained a consistent international presence through UTMB World Series and ITRA-indexed events and continues to compete as a respected figure on the mountain ultra scene.
