Magdalena Boulet (née Lewy) was born on August 1, 1973, in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, Poland, and became a US citizen on September 11, 2001. She ran track at UC Berkeley and later trained as a professional road runner under Jack Daniels, finishing second at the 2008 US Olympic Trials Marathon in Boston (2:30:19) after leading for 24 of 26 miles, then representing the United States at the Beijing Summer Olympics. When her marathon career reached its natural arc she transitioned to trail and ultra running — and the sport immediately repaid her curiosity. Her debut at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in 2015 is the stuff of legend: she ran two miles off-course mid-race, still won by 15 minutes in 19:05:21, and was named UltraRunner of the Year. She won the Marathon des Sables in 2017 — the gruelling six-stage, 250km self-supported Saharan race — and added the Leadville Trail 100 in 2019 (20:18:07), demonstrating a breadth of ultra specialisation matched by few of her peers. Beyond competition, Boulet is President of GU Energy Labs in Berkeley, one of endurance sport's most influential nutrition companies, and serves on the Western States 100 board of directors and as race director of the Miwok 100km. She is one of American distance running's most complete and multi-dimensional figures.
