About

Luís Fernandes is a Portuguese trail runner born in Jardim da Serra, Câmara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira, who took up trail running in 2012 and rose quickly to become one of the most recognisable figures on the Iberian mountain ultra scene. His landmark achievement came in 2015 when he won the 7th edition of the Madeira Island Ultra Trail (MIUT) 115km — the island's most prestigious long-distance race — in 14:36:19, becoming the first Madeiran-born runner ever to win his home event. He was subsequently recognised as a High-Performance Athlete by the IPDJ — Portugal's Institute of Sport and Youth — alongside teammates Leonardo Diogo and Manuel Faria, and was invited to compete for the Portuguese national team at the 2018 Trail World Championships in Spain, where he placed 40th in the 85km race as the second-best Portuguese finisher. He has also raced UTMB, finishing 18th in 22:49:07. A native of Madeira's mountainous interior, Fernandes has continued competing at elite level and remains one of the island's most prominent ambassadors for trail running.
