About

Katie Arnold is an American ultrarunner, author, and journalist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, whose accidental path into ultrarunning became the story of one of the sport's most celebrated memoirs. A contributing editor and former managing editor at Outside Magazine — where she spent twelve years on staff and created the popular Raising Rippers column on adventurous parenting — she began ultrarunning while processing the terminal illness and death of her father, a journey she later chronicled in her 2019 memoir Running Home, which was honoured in Best American Sports Writing. On the trails she is a genuine elite: she won the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Run, finishing 11th overall in a field of more than 700 runners, and holds victories at the Jemez Mountains 50-Mile (2018), the TransRockies 3-Day Trail Run (2014), the Jemez Mountains 50K, and the Mount Taylor 50K. She lives in Santa Fe with her husband and two daughters, coaches girls' lacrosse, and founded a children's trail running club. Her writing spans The New York Times, Runner's World, ESPN: The Magazine, Elle, and Travel and Leisure.
