Kara Henry is an American trail and ultrarunner from Boulder, Colorado, whose competitive career spans collegiate track and cross country, road marathon racing, and elite American ultramarathon competition. Born around 1984 and raised in Elmhurst, Illinois, she was an all-state cross country runner in high school and went on to compete at Butler University and the University of New Mexico. After relocating to Boulder she discovered trail running and launched her ultra career with immediate impact: she won the Bear Chase 50 Miler on her ultra debut and set a course record by 40 minutes — a striking introduction to the format. While working in marketing at Newton Running she became a regular contender at the sport's most competitive American 100-mile events, most notably finishing second at the Leadville Trail 100 in 2015 in 19:54:08 — one of North American ultrarunning's most historic and demanding races. Her combination of road speed and the ability to translate it to mountain terrain made her a formidable competitor across the full spectrum of U.S. trail ultra distances.
