About
Jonathan Rea is an American ultrarunner and climate scientist based in Boulder, Colorado, who ran his first ultra at the Golden Gate Dirty 30 50K in 2015 and built steadily from there. He won the Silverton Ultra Dirty 100K in 2017, placed second at the Javelina Jundred in 2022 in 13:05, and in 2023 had an exceptional multi-race season: 14th at the Western States 100 in June, fourth at the CCC in Chamonix in the Alps, then in October set a new men’s course record of 12:43:10 at the Javelina Jundred — his third Golden Ticket to Western States. He was named the eighth-ranked male ultrarunner in the world for 2023 by Ultrarunning Magazine. A HOKA athlete with a UTMB Index of 886, Rea has also navigated significant injury setbacks, including a stress fracture during a training sabbatical, and has been candid about the challenge of balancing a scientific career with elite-level competition.
