About
Jock Green is a South African elite trail and ultrarunner who spent 16 years as a professional road cyclist before reinventing himself as one of South Africa's most accomplished ultra-distance mountain runners. From 1995 until around 2011 he raced at the highest levels of professional cycling, competing for prominent teams including Barloworld, HSBC, AIG, and Konica-Minolta on circuits across Britain, Cape Town, China, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, Slovenia, and Spain. When his cycling career concluded, Green returned to South Africa and settled near Hartbeespoort Dam in the Magaliesberg region, where the mountain terrain drew him toward trail running. His transition was both rapid and impressive: in 2014, after just three years of focused trail training, he placed third at the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 100km and earned another podium at the Sky Run 100km in Lesotho. The following year he was selected for the South African team at the IAU World Ultra Trail Championships in France, placing 59th. He built on this momentum in 2018, winning the Ultra-Trail Drakensberg and placing third at the Karkloof 100 Miler. In 2024 he placed sixth at the UTD 160, continuing to compete at elite level into the second decade of his trail career. A Salomon South Africa athlete who has completed more than ten 100-mile races, Green represents the rare case of a professional athlete who found in ultra trail running a second peak of athletic excellence.
