About

Liang Jing (梁晶) was a Chinese ultrarunner born in March 1990 in Anhui Province who became one of the most celebrated distance runners in Chinese sporting history, earning the nicknames Liang God and General Liang for his dominance on the international mountain ultra circuit. A former factory worker who discovered competitive running and rose through the Chinese domestic trail scene with extraordinary speed, he became China's most accomplished representative at major international events: he won the Ultra Gobi in 2018 — the 400km race across the Gobi Desert, one of the most demanding point-to-point desert ultras in the world — finished second at the Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji 2019, and placed runner-up at the Hong Kong 100k in 2020. He also competed at the UTMB in Chamonix on two occasions. He had won three consecutive editions of the Baiyin High-Altitude Mountain Marathon in Gansu Province when, on May 22, 2021, an extreme weather event — high winds and freezing rain — struck the race at elevation during its fifth edition, killing 21 runners. Liang Jing was among those who died, aged 31. His death shook the global trail running community and contributed to sweeping reforms in race safety standards across China.
