Ionel Cristian Manole was born in Romania in 1988 and studied in Granada, Spain, where he now makes his home near Madrid. By profession a firefighter, he came to ultra-trail running in 2018 — drawn initially by the idea of a multi-day mountain adventure — and signed up for the Tor des Géants, a 330 km sufferfest that immediately set the tone for his career. He is vegan, a father, and a passionate advocate for the sport. Manole broke through internationally by winning the Ultra Sierra Nevada and the Val d'Aran by UTMB, and has since appeared at the front of fields at UTMB Mont-Blanc, Transgrancanaria, and Hong Kong 100. His story of late-starting and rapidly reaching elite level at distances over 100 km has made him an inspirational figure in the European ultra community.
