About
Grant Maughan is an Australian professional superyacht captain and ultrarunner who became one of ultra sport's most remarkable late-starting success stories. Born around 1964 in Newcastle, New South Wales, he took up ultrarunning at age 47 and rapidly became a feared competitor in desert and extreme ultra events globally. His signature race is Badwater 135 in California's Death Valley, where he has competed seven times with multiple top-ten finishes and second-place results in both 2013 and 2014 — a personal best of 24 hours 43 minutes 8 seconds. He won the Iditarod Trail Invitational 130-mile race in Alaska in 36 hours 39 minutes in arctic winter conditions, completed a self-supported solo Badwater 146 in under 50 hours breaking all existing records, and has accumulated over 15 ultra victories across 73 career race results. Beyond running, he has spent 28 years captaining explorer yachts across the Arctic, Antarctic, and all major oceans — making him one of the sport's most genuinely adventurous characters.
