About
Gaspar Bartra is a Spanish trail runner from Vilassar de Mar on the Catalan coast who races for CE Vilassar and made one of the most startling breakthrough performances in the 2022 European mountain ultra season — finishing second at the Val d'Aran by UTMB in 24:27:36 in what was his very first 100-mile event. The Val d'Aran by UTMB is a 161km high-Alpine traversal through the Val d'Aran in the Spanish Pyrenees with over 11,000 metres of accumulated elevation gain, and Bartra's second-place debut on this demanding course — described at the time as an outsider with substantial long-distance experience but little public profile — earned him direct qualification for UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, propelling him from regional competitor to international circuit contender in a single race. He had built his preparation across the Catalan and Spanish trail calendar, including the Salomon Ultra Pirineu 94.7km, the CCC at UTMB 2019, and a series of regional mountain events in the pre-Pyrenees, and continued developing at home with a victory at the Marathon Teams Rocacorba 50K in 2024. With a UTMB Index of 700 and one of the most impressive 100-mile debuts in recent European trail history, Bartra is one of Catalonia's most quietly accomplished mountain ultra athletes and a runner whose best results may still lie ahead.
