About

Gabe Joyes is an American mountain runner, coach, and adventurer based in Lander, Wyoming, who grew up playing soccer before time spent in Montana and Colorado during college drew him toward high terrain and eventually into ultra running as the most direct means of moving through mountain landscapes quickly and purposefully. A SCARPA team athlete and member of the Uphill Athlete coaching staff through his Trails and Tarmac practice, Joyes is a specialist in rugged, technical mountain events — the kind of races where route-finding, vertical gain, and terrain difficulty matter as much as outright running speed. His résumé spans continents: he won the Bighorn 100 in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains in 2018, set the course record at the Never Summer 100K in Colorado in 2016, placed third at the Dragon's Back Race — a 240-mile five-day traverse of the Welsh mountains — in 2024, and finished tenth at the Hardrock 100 in 2025. Additional victories at the Teton Mountain Runs Cody Peak 50K (2023, CR), El Vaquero Logo 50K (2022), Run the Red 50K (2021, CR), and the Dead Horse 50 (2025) complete a résumé of consistent mountain ultra results spanning a decade of competitive racing. He holds a UTMB Index of 741, writes about trail running and mountain culture for iRunFar, and is one of Wyoming's most versatile and accomplished high-terrain ultra performers.
