About

Freddy Thévenin is a French ultra-trail runner born on June 3, 1977, who relocated to La Plaine-des-Palmistes on Réunion Island, where the Grand Raid de La Réunion — La Diagonale des Fous — became both the backdrop and the defining race of his competitive career. One of the most renowned and brutal ultramarathons in the world, the Grand Raid crosses the volcanic interior of Réunion over approximately 165 kilometres with more than 9,000 metres of elevation gain, and Thévenin became one of the island's most accomplished male competitors: finishing second in 25:40:46 in 2013 and third in 2015, helping establish a generation of Réunionnais athletes who could challenge international rivals on home terrain. His results on other Indian Ocean races confirmed his quality: he won the Ultra Maurice 120km in 2014 (17:14:48) and the Royal Raid Ile Maurice 80km in 2015 on Mauritius. These results placed him third overall in the 2015 Ultra-Trail World Tour standings — the closest a Réunion-based athlete had come to major international recognition for a body of work built almost entirely in one of trail running's most remote environments. Racing for Club Prudence Créole, Thévenin was for several years the defining face of island ultra-trail racing in the Indian Ocean.
