About

Darla Askew is an American ultrarunner from Oregon who has built one of the most enduring careers of any American woman at the Hardrock 100 — the notorious 100-mile race through the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, conducted entirely above 9,000 feet with over 33,000 feet of cumulative elevation change. Her Hardrock record spans more than six years of consistent podium performances: third in 2012, second in 2013, and third again in 2018 — a range of achievement that reflects not just speed but mastery of altitude, technical terrain, and the mountain weather that makes the Hardrock one of the sport's most selective events. She prefers running the course in the counter-clockwise direction for its steeper climbs and more manageable descents, and was noted during her 2013 second-place finish for smiling throughout the entire race. In 2022 she won the Pine to Palm 100 Mile in southern Oregon, adding a home-state 100-mile victory to her résumé, and returned to the Hardrock in 2023 to finish 10th in the women's race, continuing a multi-decade competitive relationship with one of the defining events of American mountain ultra running. With a UTMB Index of 596, Askew represents the dedicated cohort of American mountain ultra specialists for whom the Hardrock is a career-defining relationship with a specific and extraordinary piece of terrain.
