Chad Trammell is an Anchorage, Alaska-based dentist and ultrarunner who demonstrated that training at altitude and in the long wilderness terrain of Alaska builds precisely the aerobic platform needed to compete at the highest level of America's most storied mountain 100-milers. At age 35 in August 2019, he arrived at the Leadville Trail 100 — the "Race Across the Sky," contested at elevations between 9,200 and 12,600 feet in the Colorado Rockies — and finished second overall behind winner Ryan Smith in a time of 17:56:27, his margin over third-place Devon Olson of Steamboat Springs a mere 52 seconds. The physical toll was severe: he nearly passed out at the finish line late on Saturday night and was escorted directly to the medical tent. In 2023 he placed 4th overall at the Kodiak Ultramarathons by UTMB 100K (10:34:52) in Big Bear Lake, California, alongside other Alaskans posting top-20 results in California's competitive ultra circuit. He has 11 results in the UltraRunning Magazine database across his racing career.
