About
Bed Bahadur Sunuwar is a Nepali Army athlete and high-altitude mountain runner who has represented Nepal at the most demanding trail and ultra events in Asia. He won the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon (THEM) in 2016, clocking 4:10:00 to take the full marathon open category at the world's highest marathon — a race that starts at Everest Base Camp on the Khumbu Glacier at 5,356 metres of altitude and descends via rough mountain trails and yak paths to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, at 3,440m, covering 42.195km on terrain that has been run annually on May 29 since 2003 to commemorate the first ascent of Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. Sunuwar placed 3rd in the 2017 edition (4:05:40). A key member of the Nepal Army trail running programme, he was also part of the Nepali contingent that placed 1st and 2nd overall at the Vibram Hong Kong 100 — at the time a flagship event of the Ultra-Trail World Tour and one of Asia's most prestigious 100km mountain trail races — and has competed in the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker alongside Nepal Army teammates. One of a growing cohort of Nepali competitive runners bringing the country's altitude-forged endurance tradition to international trail circuits.
